North Sydney’s S G Ball team provided the Newcastle Knights with a dominant show of force in the first half of their round four match at Cessnock Oval on Saturday.

The Knights scored early due to an error on the halfway line by Norths, but the Bears appeared on top of the Knights for most of the half with Bevan De Vries, Koleakikava Utoikamanu, Matt Place and Michael Luong among the Bears backline that excelled in both defense and attack. While the Bears forwards forced many an error.

At the 12 minute mark Bears hooker Michael Luong’s great dummy half work was rewarded with Bevan De Vries showing good skill to score and even up the scores 4-4.

It was 3 successive attacks at the Bears line that gave the Knights their second try to halfback Adam Clydsdale.

The Bears showed courage to thwart further attacks to keep the halftime score to 10-6 to the Knights.

In the second half however the Bears appeared unable to withstand successive penalties with the Knights handed some lucky calls on the error count at crucial stages of the match.

NEWCASTLE 36 (7 tries, 4 goals) defeated NORTH SYDNEY 4 (Bevan De Vries try) Halftime 10-6 Newcastle.

Hard working Bears Prop Sean Moe provided the lone try for Norths Harold Matthews team in a 50-6 loss to Newcastle. David Dean converted the try, scored early in the second half, as the Bears attempted a resurgence after the break.
