They were wearing Central Coast Bears t-shirts but under 8s juniors from three North Sydney District clubs were on field at North Sydney Oval on Saturday to cheer on the North Sydney Bears after completing a specially devised program of football drills.
Named the “Bring Back the Bears Day” Bears SG Ball trainer Nick McGarth saw an opportunity to remind the North Sydney community that the North Sydney District is an important part of the Central Coast bid.
“I’m at uni studying sports coaching as a lot of the guys helping out today are”, explained Nick. “As one of our subjects we thought we’d run an event, something for the local juniors”.
“We’ve been hearing so much about the Central Coast bid that we thought it was a good idea to have a promotion around North Sydney to remind everybody that they are an important part of the Bid”.
“We felt it was a good match for us to get an event going for our Uni subject, but also to help the Bears in what we’re doing”.
“Today we have about 30 odd kids, all under 8 local juniors from the Asquith Magpies, North Sydney Brothers and the Willoughby Roos”.
“Essentially we’re running through an hour long session with some skills drills that hopefully can help them play better on the weekend and maybe give the coaches a bit of a hand to come up with some techniques to give them that edge to help improve the experience for the kids”.
“Then we’ll clap on the NSW Cup side as they face Wentworthville. They often don’t get to see the North Sydney Jersey and its something for them to aim for”.
“We’ll also have a relay at half time”.
