A bruising encounter last week with Auckland has left the Bears with additional injury worries but spirits are high as the team look forward to the home crowd support of North Sydney Oval.
Indeed a large crowd is expected with the annual Australian Universities Rugby League Interstate Shield Match between NSW and QLD taking place on Saturday ahead of the NSW Cup match against the Windsor Wolves.
NSW won last years match 19-18 at Suncorp Stadium but the Queensland side has dominated the contest over the past decade or so and will be keen to take the shield back home with them.
The match is also the selection trial for the Australian Universities Rugby League squad, picked to tour England and France at the end of the year, ensuring that a lot will be at stake for members of both teams.
Both sides are coached by former NRL players; NSW has Brendon Reeves (Illawarra and Manly) now in his 3rd year, whilst Queensland have former Bronco Darren Smith, who played in the team last year and has now taken over the coaching roll.
Whilst it’s not ‘State of Origin’ level, the boys still play with the same passion and it's always a hard fought match which should be an entertaining curtain raiser.
