We caught up with Head Coach Pat Weisner after the match to get his take on the game “The Bulldogs played really good wet weather footy, and I thought Drew Hutchinson controlled the game with his kicking. This meant we were in our own half for most of the game and we just didn’t have the patience with the ball that we needed to have if we were going to work our way back when we fell behind.” He went on to explain “The 90m kick return try we conceded was disappointing and the loose ball they picked up and went 80m to score also hurt us and both were against the run of play. Throw in a kick that ricocheted off one of our players legs and into a Bulldog for a try and there was 18 points we don’t usually give away”. Weisner concluded “we just weren’t good enough to find a way back. Full credit to the Bulldogs, they were the better side and deserved to win”.
Looking ahead to round 21, we are off to Belmore to take on the Canterbury Bulldogs for round 21. Head Coach Pat Weisner commented “The Bulldogs pushed us all the way 3 weeks ago and are in a battle to make the top 5, so this will be another tough one and we are preparing for another semi-final type game this weekend”. At this point in the season, all the games are big and important. The team have dug deep all year and will need to continue to play with that level of intensity, grit and heart over the next 6 rounds as we close out the regular season of the Knock-On Effect NSW Cup. One more away game before we return to Bear Park on Sunday 4th August. Get around the team, show your support and let’s bring this season home in red & black style. “Another tough grinding win by the boys at a very tough venue to play at. Souths had their strongest 17 out in months and I thought they defended very well in a very physical game” stated Head Coach Pat Weisner. He continued “We made 10 errors in the first half which was unacceptable, but we turned it around and went 16 sets in a row without an error in the 2nd half to put the game away, despite a late scare in the last 4 mins”. Looking ahead to the big first verse second clash this Saturday in the nation’s capital when we take on the Canberra Raiders, Weisner commented “With the short turnaround this week we need to freshen up, manage our injuries and prepare ourselves for a huge game down there at Belconnen against a full-strength Raiders team”.
This Sunday we head over the bridge to take on the Bunnies in the final of the 2024 Mario Fenech Cup. Bears secured a win in game one and are keen to retain the Cup with another win this Sunday. In the advent of a loss, the winner is decided on aggregate points. The Rabbitohs will be hosting a fun footy arvo at Coogee Oval with a double header of Jersey Flegg and NSW Cup. Check out the team named to pull on the red & black jersey this Sunday >>
After three weeks on the road and a much-needed bye, the team returns to Bear Park this Sunday to take on the Canterbury Bulldogs. Taking on the dogs for the first time this season will be a big test for the boys but great to do it on our home soil. Sixteen rounds now completed and ten regular rounds remaining before the finals begin, the team are keen to continue to maintain a top 5 position on the ladder.

Speaking with Head Coach, Pat Weisner, post-game he stated “Absolutely awful conditions meant that the game was always going to be low scoring, tight and down to a bounce of the ball or 50/50 decision. We defended very well again, and were never behind in the match. We spent the whole game protecting our lead, which we did successfully until the final play of the game”. Weisner went on to comment “Also very disappointed that we gave the Roosters so many opportunities in the last 15 mins due to our errors, but the weather had such a huge impact on this game that it’s difficult to take much out of it other than the point we got for the draw. We move on hoping for a dryer track this week.”. This Sunday we go again and head back to Bear Park for Mother’s Day as we take on the Parramatta Eels, kick off at 3pm. Pop it in the diary now and see you there! Check out the team named to pull on a red & black jersey this weekend >>
This Sunday we go again and return back to Bear Park to take on the second place Canberra Raiders for our ANZAC Round. Weisner has the team working hard at training this week and commented “We need to improve our defence this weekend and if we can do that, I’m confident we can cause an upset vs the Raiders”. Now it’s time for Bears fans, young and old, to come on out to North Sydney Oval to cheer the boys home to a win.

As the red & black and white & black retro jerseys and Junior Bears piled into North Sydney Oval, the excitement was high to be finally back at Bear Park for the 2024 season. After extreme weather hit the east coast on Friday, the sight of blue sky and a blaring sun on game day was welcomed by all. And the oval really was a thing of beauty! The grass was brilliant green, the historic Ken Irvine Scoreboard in action, the cold Bear Park Brews flowed, the live bland blared its retro tunes and the footy on the field was on fire. What a way to kick off our home game series than with Bears v Magpies in the first clash of the Jason Taylor Cup. To commemorate Retro Round, the Bears team donned the iconic red & black hoops “Heritage” jersey for the game.
Fresh from four days off over the Easter long weekend the team are pumped and raring to get back out onto the field. This Sunday we return to North Sydney Oval for our first home game day of the 2024 season. It’s the first clash of the Jason Taylor Cup where we take on the Western Suburbs Magpies and winner is awarded over two games on aggregate points. Bears currently hold the trophy and are keen to keep it that way. Check out the players named to pull on a red & black jersey this Sunday and it’s a solid looking team. We see the return of Regan Hughes who has been recovering from injury and is biting at the bit to get back in and play. Big Nelson Asofa-Solomona returns, he has shaken off the nerves from his first game as a Bear and is ready to make an impact on the field. If you want to see some top shelf footy, this is the game to be at!
The trip across the Tasman didn’t slow our Cup team down, as they came out all guns blazing in Pukekohe. From the get go the team was switched on and worked hard to take a good lead keeping the Warriors to just one try in the first half. Sua Fa’alogo got the Bears on the board with a beautiful chip and chase converted by Keagan Russell-Smith. Only moments later Bears were attacking the line again, Russell-Smith puts through a sweat grubber to the corner that is easily picked up by Kieran Hayman and grounded. Six minutes along and Fa’alogo makes a break off a Russell-Smith offload and darts for the white line, Russell-Smith converts.
This Saturday our four junior reps teams are all at Eric Tweedale Stadium to take on the Parramatta Eels while our U16 Academy is at Brookvale Oval to play the Sea Eagles. All four games against the Eels will be live streamed on the NSWRL TV app.
This weekend all four Junior Reps teams head out to HE Laybutt to take on the Sea Eagles while our U16 Academy are set for a tough clash against the Penrith Panthers at Doug Rennie Oval. Round 6 saw our inaugural Lisa Fiaola Cup team secure a draw against the Bunnies, a great step forward on their rugby league journey. Our U16 Academy put on another show of great strength as they defeated the Rabbitohs on Saturday. This local junior league focused development squad have been growing in skills and confidence every round and has been wonderful to watch.
In hot and windy conditions, we got our Knock-On Effect NSW Cup 2024 season underway last Sunday as we took on St George Illawarra Dragons in Wollongong. Only five minutes in, Ben Talty got the Bears on the board with a straight and strong push for the line. The Dragons quickly answered jumping on a Bears mistake to even the scores at 4 a piece, and there the score remained for the rest of the half. Both sides seemed to be finding their combinations in the first half, and although the boys in the red & black made a number of errors, mostly in over enthusiasm, their fierce defence kept them in the game. “They had 10 sets attacking our tryline and didn’t score, so we knew if we could control the ball, we would be in with a chance despite using a lot of petrol in the 1st half.” stated Head Coach Pat Weisner. On the field, our captain, Kurt De Luis, could be clearly heard throughout the venue applauding the team every time they held out a set of six. His leadership and positive energy infectious.
With the glitz and glamour of Vegas now done, it’s time for the real season to begin and what a clanger of a game we have for Round 1 of the 2024 Knock-On Effect NSW Cup. We travel to Wollongong on Sunday to take on the Dragons who will be headed up by ex-Bear Jesse Marschke. Historically, we do not fair well at Collegians Sporting Complex but this year has a fresh feel and the boys are red hot and ready to rumble. Head Coach Weisner has the team training hard and with Kurt De Luis at our helm we are heading in a good direction. This season has a lot to live up to, after coming so close to the top prize in 2023, but our focus is on taking it one game at a time. Let’s bring the heat Bears! Check out your Round 1 team below >>
While the big boys head into round 1, our junior reps teams are heading into round 6 taking on the Bunnies at Redfern Oval and the U16s Academy play locally at Epping Boys High. In the final days of summer on a beautiful warm night at The Greens North Sydney, we brought together our corporate partners, sponsors, members, staff and senior playing group to celebrate the launch of the North Sydney Bears 2024 Knock-On Effect NSW Cup season. Guests sipped on chilled Bear Park Brews and Grizzly Gin-gers, featuring our very own Bear Park Gin, consumed delicious morsels of bao buns, sliders, arancini balls and gourmet sausage rolls and reveled in the feeling that only the anticipation of a new season brings. With one week until comp kick off to go, pre-season is almost done, trial games successfully completed and now the big job of tackling the next 26 rounds begins.
At training on Tuesday, the team gathered around Head Coach Pat Weisner with eager anticipation for the announcement of our 2024 Knock-On Effect NSW Cup Leadership Team. With some on bended knee and others standing, all fixated on their head coach, listening with respect and admiration, you could feel the bond this year’s playing group already has. As Weisner says, winning the two main pre-season trials helps in creating a happy group, and he is so right however the connection goes deeper than this and we hope to see their combined strength continue forward into the competition when it kicks off next weekend.
