For over 50 years Ken Irvine has held the national rugby league top try scorer title, with 212 tries in his 15 year career as a first-grade player. And tonight, that record could possibly be matched or broken. Alex Johnston, winger with the South Sydney Rabbitohs, notched up his 211th try against the Broncos last Sunday bringing his total now within striking distance of the iconic Irvine’s record. When the Rabbitohs take on the Roosters at Allianz Stadium tonight, Friday 13th March, excitement will be high and we collectively hold our breath to watch if history will be made.

Irvine played 176 first grade games with the Bears over 13 years, cementing himself as a Bears Legend and earning the #2 jersey in our Team of the Century announced in 2006. After leaving the Bears in 1970, Irvine went to the dark side, playing with the Manly Sea Eagles for a further 3 seasons. Interestingly, it was another Bears Legend, Harold Horder, who held the top try scoring record before it was taken by Ken Irvine. Bears know how to attack!
