The North Sydney Bears are deeply saddened by the passing of one of the Club’s greatest ever servants, Norm Strong, a true Bears legend whose contribution to our proud history will never be forgotten.

A North Sydney junior, Norm represented the Bears in first grade from 1947 to 1962, forging a reputation as one of the toughest and most respected hookers of his era. A rugged competitor and remarkably consistent forward, he mastered the craft of hooking and embodied the determination and resilience that have long defined the red and black.

Former North Sydney President Harry McKinnon once described Norm as “one of the finest clubmen to play for any Sydney premiership side,” a fitting tribute to a player whose loyalty and commitment to the Bears spanned more than 15 seasons.

Although North Sydney’s opportunities in the finals were limited during his playing career, Norm’s standards never wavered. Week after week he gave everything for the jersey, earning the admiration of teammates, opponents and supporters alike.

Norm held the Club’s record for the most first grade appearances until it was surpassed by Greg Florimo in 1997, a testament to his extraordinary longevity and dedication. After retiring at the end of the 1960 season, he answered the call to return the following year before eventually hanging up his boots after breaking the record for the most grade games, previously held by Newtown captain ‘Bumper’ Farrell.

Beyond his on-field achievements, Norm also left a lasting mark on the game itself, being widely credited with helping bring the mouthguard into regular use after adopting the protective equipment in the mid-1950s.

Norm Strong’s legacy extends far beyond records and statistics. He represented everything the North Sydney Bears aspire to be—loyal, courageous, humble and fiercely committed to the Club.
