• TEAM LIST TUESDAY: ROUND 22

    Knock-On Effect NSW Cup 2024

DOGS BITE BACK AT THE BEARS

We knew the winning streak was bound to end, but what a glorious 9 rounds we had! Last Saturday we headed to Belmore to take on the Dogs for Round 22 of the Knock-On Effect NSW Cup. Although the Bulldogs were first on the board with an early penalty kick it was the Bears who crossed the white line first with a long-range break by Sua Fa’alogo who offloaded to a supporting Allan Fitzgibbon who dived over the line. Kieran Hayman converted and the Bears lead 2 – 6. The lead didn’t last long as the Bulldogs retaliated swiftly, finding holes in our defensive line to runΒ a full field try and convert to take back the lead 8 – 6. Ex-Bear Drew Hutchison’sΒ kicking game and play control was on point, nabbing a 40/20 to keep momentum with the blue and white. Only three minutes later, the Dogs found the try line again sliding over in the corner and converting to extend their lead. With 7.5 minutes remaining in the first half Fa’alogo makes a great break to get the Bears down the field. On the next play the ball findsΒ Fitzgibbon,Β passes to Reimis Smith who chips and chases getting a hand to the ball after a Bulldogs fumble over the try line. Hayman uncharacteristicallyΒ misses the conversion. Another penalty goal to the Bulldogs just before half time seesΒ the boys head to the sheds down 16Β – 10.

The second half saw the Bulldogs come out firing while the Bears seemed unable to take back control of the game. The home side ran in three tries over twenty minutes while keeping the Bears scoreless. The final hooter sounded with the Bulldogs taking a resounding win 32 – 10.

We caught up with Head Coach Pat Weisner after the match to get his take on the game “The Bulldogs played really good wet weather footy, and I thought Drew Hutchinson controlled the game with his kicking. This meant we were in our own half for most of the game and we just didn’t have the patience with the ball that we needed to have if we were going to work our way back when we fell behind.”Β  He went on to explain “The 90m kick return try we conceded was disappointing and the loose ball they picked up and went 80m to score also hurt us and both were against the run of play. Throw in a kick that ricocheted off one of our players legs and into a Bulldog for a try and there was 18 points we don’t usually give away”. Weisner concluded “we just weren’t good enough to find a way back. Full credit to the Bulldogs, they were the better side and deserved to win”.

The team head into a big week of training now with lots to work on ahead of a clash with the Dragons this Sunday when we return to Bear Park. We have a massive month of footy on at North Sydney Oval in August with 4 big home game days. Get down to the oval, get around the team and let them hear your cheers of support!
