Club Announcement – Laurie Moraschi.
The North Sydney Bears are sad to announce the passing of 1970s rugged North Sydney centre Laurie Moraschi.
The recipient of the first-ever NSW Country Player of the Year while playing for Griffith in 1965 in the same year he was picked to represent New South Wales Firsts and Country Firsts.
Beginning his grade career at Balmain in 1966 and appearing in that club’s Grand Final in the same year against St George he played alongside some of Rugby Leagueβs finest in Arthur Beetson and Keith Barnes.
After sitting out the 1969 season in protest over the New South Wales Rugby League’s transfer system he joined the Ken Irvine lead North Sydney team in 1970.
A highlight for both Laurie Moraschi and the North Sydney team was a win over his former club Balmain in August of 1971.
Pairing with Leo Toohey the hard-fought match was worthy of two articles in the Sun-Herald.
The North Sydney Club sends its condolences to Laurie’s family and friends in the Rugby League community.
