Vale Fred Thompson
The North Sydney Bears are sad to announce the passing of Life Member and Board Member, Fred Thompson.
Fred was a long serving contributor to Rugby League, particularly to the North Sydney Rugby League community.
Fred played junior league with McMahon’s Point in the North Sydney District and was a Delegate of McMahon’s Point to North Sydney Junior League.
Fred was a long-serving President of North Sydney Junior Rugby League and was a Director of North Sydney District Rugby League Football Club until his passing. He was a Director of the North Sydney League’s Club Limited from 2001, a Delegate to Club New South Wales as well as a Delegate to League’s Club Australia.
Fred is a Life member of the North Sydney Junior Rugby League, the North Sydney District Rugby League Football Club, the New South Wales Rugby League and North Sydney League’s Club Limited.
Additionally, Fred was Awarded a Medal for Australia Sports, was the President and a Life member of the Willoughby District Sub-Branch of the Australia Legion of ex-Service Men and Women, a State Councillor and Life member of the Australia Legion of Ex-Service Men and Women, a Committee member of the Chatswood RSL Sub-Branch and the Trustee of the Remembrance Garden Chatswood.
North Sydney Bears Chairman, Perry Lopez spoke of Fred’s character, “Fred Thompson was a stalwart of our great club. We have been fortunate to have had Fred involved in all aspects of our club for decades and his willingness to give was a quality that made Fred the man he was.
His dedication, commitment and love for the Bears will never be lost to our great club. It’s very rare that one has the opportunity to sit alongside such a great community man who bled ‘red and Black’.
On behalf the North Sydney Bears Board, management, members and fans we pass on our sincere condolences to his partner Elizabeth, son Steve and all extended family, Freddy will be sadly missed by all”.
Fred’s funeral service will be held at 12.15pm on Thursday 18 April at Northern Suburbs Crematorium, North Chapel. 199 Delhi Road, North Ryde 2113.
