The Bears took on the Mounties in a top of the table clash on Sunday. There was a lot of excitement going into the game as both teams entered the round undefeated. The first half did not disappoint as the Bears struck first with an early try in the left corner by Sera Kaukiono, this was a result of momentum from a number of good set completions. We went into half time with the scores locked at 6-6.

Our middles Lacey Shields, Aliti Namoce and Josie Maejiirs had outstanding line speed and defensive pressure holding Mounties out of the attacking zone.

The game started to open up a little in the second half and Taz added a lot of value in moving from attacking hooker role to backing up in defence which allowed us to dominate the ruck.

Chloe Laupepe had great vision distributing the ball with ease to get some good metres up the edges and lay platform to split the Mounties defence.

The Bears kept attacking, chipping away through our left side allowing Sera to have a dig 8 meters from the try line for her second try of the game.

It didn’t take long for the Bears to score again, this time through an intercept try to Shontelle Stowers. Another text book set through the hands down the right edge provided a try for Lexi Kiriwi and the Bears lead 20-6 with 20 minutes to go.

Mounties showed why they were also undefeated as they gained a lot of momentum, scoring two tries and trimming the margin to six points.

We were strong enough to hold them out in the last five minutes, winning 20-14 and now in first place on the table. The Bears will enjoy two weeks off before taking on Saints at St Marys Leagues Stadium on Friday 7 June, kick off at 7.00pm.
